I'm so Glad...

Long ago, Ben's family used to sing, "I'm So Glad When Daddy Comes Home," as soon as his dad came through the door after work (this has little to do with this entry, other than to explain the title).

Growing up in Ben's family, it was a game to have a child act as a pillow for someone else (which probably explains Ben's humility - after all, it is rather difficult to be prideful when someone is treating you like a pillow). David enjoys playing pillow, making fake snoring sounds, and wiggling around to "wake up" Daddy. Today Analeigh decided to join in the fun.

The Sections in the Doctrine and Covenants

Once again this year, the Carlton family, from our church, hosted a Christmas Eve party in which guests present a talent - which is our gift to the baby Jesus. Once again, due to his inability to sing, dance, or otherwise present a stage-worthy performance, Ben created a video. This year, Ben created a silly commercial to sell a single-track CD containing a song to help people memorize the sections in the Doctrine and Covenants.

After Ben sent the video to a select audience, his brother Geoff, informed him that the group, "Sons of Ammon," had already beaten him to the punch by recording a song entitled, "Sections of the D&C." You can listen to their song by clicking here, scrolling down to "Extras:," and then clicking on "Sections of the D&C."

Regardless, enjoy the fake commercial. And remember, no matter how ridiculous you think the video is, watch it all the way through, as the end credits are rather enjoyable.

Christmas at The Draper's

Ben has fond memories of lining up in the hallway on Christmas morning to walk into the living room and see what presents awaited him. Today David and Analeigh were recorded on video. David seemed to get the basic idea of unwrapping presents. Analeigh, as you can see in the second video, didn't enjoy herself quite as much.

Just to prove that Analeigh did eventually have fun, here she is, playing with some of her stacking cups.

Here David is playing with his two favorite toys: a wooden train and a tractor. Analeigh is also playing with her favorite thing to eat: paper.

Finally, our Christmas tree, purchased 5 years ago at a Dollar Tree store in Logan, UT is on it's last legs. Literally. It just decided to jump off the shelf and commit suicide (or so we would assume, from the power cord it is hanging by).

We're Online!

While looking up locations on Google Maps, Ben noticed that Great Bend has suddenly become large enough to warrant the use of "Street View," which gives you access to a 360 degree view of the area you are looking at.

Most impressive is that you can see our van in our driveway (where the red arrow is pointing). Go ahead, look it up. And, if you zoom in, you can see David's turtle sandbox. Enjoy!

She's Done It!

After months and months of anticipation, Analeigh has finally learned to crawl. Sure, she's been resistant. She's tried pulling herself up to stand, she tried rolling wherever she wants to go, and she's tried looking adorable so that someone would pick her up and carry her. Alas, she has finally given in to nature. So, here is some video to enjoy (sorry the first one is a bit dark).

And, for old time's sake, enjoy the first video we have of David crawling.

The Story of Ammon Revisited

About 1 year ago, Ben made a stop-motion animation video, entitled The Story of Ammon. Due to its warm reception, Ben proceeded to upload it to YouTube on 29 December 2007. Now, nearly one year later, the video has finally been viewed over 1,000 times (1,001 according to the attached image). While such a number of views over the course of a year does not compare to the success of numerous other videos, it has certainly fared better than a 14-second video about watching grass grow, which has just 310 views at this time and is over 2 years old. Game. Set. Match. Victory for The Story of Ammon!

Analeigh at 9 Months

Analeigh is now nine months old. She has the beginnings of a tooth, but nothing that shows in these pictures. Nevertheless, you can still enjoy her cuteness.

It's Santa!

This evening was the Saint Francis Community Services' Christmas Party for all clients, foster parents, staff and families. Santa even made a guest appearance! As you can see below, Analeigh was very willing to sit with Santa. David, however, climbed up into the front seat of our double stroller, then over that seat into the back of the stroller, so as to get as far away from Santa as possible.

Luckily for him, Santa is a kind, understanding personality, and gave David a gift anyway. David came away with a firetruck - which he was VERY excited to play with. Analeigh came away with a counting turtle toy, which sings to her - she seems to enjoy it.

Cannibalism

In Ben's opinion, the latest version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory cannot compare to the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Alas, the latest incarnation had one redeeming scene that Ben found rather humorous:

Willy Wonka: Do you like my meadow? Try some of my grass! Please have a blade, please do, it's so delectable and so darn good looking!
Charlie Bucket: You can eat the grass?
Willy Wonka: Of course you can! Everything in this room is eatable, even *I'm* eatable! But that is called "cannibalism," my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies.

On that note, David decided he was not hungry for breakfast today. However, he was rather interested in his foot. Hopefully it provided him with the essential nutrients for the day!

Santa's Workshop

This evening, David went to Santa's Workshop at the Great Bend Recreation Center. David enjoyed putting stickers on a Christmas tree, making a reindeer necklace, frosting his own cookie, putting candy inside of a bell (made of sugar and egg whites) and wrapping it in cellophane, and making "reindeer feed" (made from oatmeal, sugar, and glitter). When we got home, he enjoyed showing off his treasures.

This Feels out of Place

We live behind Jefferson Elementary School. Like many schools, they have a sign that tells about various school events. On occasion they post interesting quotes. However, since we're not in Utah or Idaho, seeing a quote from Brigham Young felt rather out of place... though it was enjoyable to see.

"Love the giver. Not the gift." - Brigham Young

Look Who's Babbling

Analeigh has begun to speak her mind. Generally her mind appears to be focused on the monosyllabic sounds of "da, da, da." Nevertheless, she is still speaking her mind.

And even though she isn't crawling just yet, you still get to see her go from a crawling position to sitting up. Enjoy!

The Lights of Great Bend

Tonight we went to check out the Christmas lights in Great Bend at Veteran's Memorial Park and Brit Spaugh Park. Due to the lack of light in taking the pictures, they appear a bit blurry. Anyway, the light show was great as we drove around each of the parks. There were lights animating two turtle doves, three french hens, etc. So, in addition to the few pictures, we recorded a video of a lion jumping through hoops (since David loves lions). Enjoy!

David Makes a Train

David has recently taken to lining up various items and then pushing them around the room. It seems he has an obsession with trains (along with trucks and tractors). But, as you can see in the picture below, he has taken to being the train's conductor.

Thanksgiving Vacation

Ben took Wednesday off from work at Saint Francis and our family drove down to Texas to be with Ben's brother, Steven, and his family. We came back today (Saturday). The drive from Great Bend, KS to Dallas, TX is about 8 hours, which is similar to the drive Ben's parents used to make when they were living in Michigan and went down to Kentucky each Thanksgiving. So, the drive brought back some memories for him (mostly boring memories of watching the landscape pass by). But, even though the drive each way was long, there was a lot of fun on the days in between the car trips. The pictures you will see below are not in chronological order by any means, just the best order for the stories they tell.

Analeigh was very happy to see her Uncle Steven and Aunt Janet and did not seem to mind being held by them. She even snuggled up to her aunt for a moment. Thus, Analeigh seems to be coping well with any symptoms of separation anxiety (then again, Analeigh might just have been happy to have been taken out of her car seat).

David and his cousin, Nathan, did everything together. They sat at the table together, played with trains and trucks together, and, even when they were apart, fell asleep in random places together.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, which was made all the more lively when David and Nathan went upstairs to the balcony which over looks the dining room. As we looked up, Nathan was about to drop a C-3PO doll onto the table. We all focused on telling Nathan not to throw anything down. In the meantime, since we weren't addressing him, David determined it would be okay to throw the bungee cord he was holding over the railing and into the fruit salad. Its a pity we weren't recording video, because it was hilarious. Alas, David did give us another opportunity, later that evening, when he threw his bouncy ball onto the counter and into the pumpkin pie, as pictured below.

At some point, Janet pulled out a bag full of plastic balls, similar to the ones you might find in the ball pits at a McDonald's Play Place. David had fun tossing them around and Nathan's two brothers had fun burying him in the storage tote.

Later, on Black Friday, we checked out the stores (closer to 10 a.m., so as to avoid the madness). Steven took us on a tour and showed us The Flower Mound, for which the town of Flower Mound, TX is named. We didn't have our camera out when we passed by, so we grabbed this picture off the internet. In order to help you visualize what we saw, The Flower Mound was just as desolate-looking when we passed by, but the sky was a bit more gray, since it was raining. The cool thing about this picture is that we went shopping at the Radio Shack in the strip mall you see in the background - so even though you can't see us in the photo, its kind of like we're right there. On another note, the mound is privately owned so it is protected from further development (such as commercial and residential development) so it will always be as barren as you see it now.

Finally, we went to the Dallas LDS Temple, as we wanted to purchase some items at The Church's Distribution Center. We took some pictures using the night setting, which lengthens the exposure time so as to capture more light. However, if the person moves, the picture becomes blurred, as these photos did. Nevertheless, they are fun to look at. And, just in case you were feeling curious, the following persons are in the last photo: Ben, Analeigh, David, Elizabeth, Benjamin (born on Ben's birthday), Janet, Nathan, and Preston.

In summary, we had a wonderful time and would like to thank Steven and Janet for being such excellent hosts.

Pretzel Time

One of Ben's favorite memories growing up is that of making soft pretzels with his dad after some family home evening lessons. Ben enjoyed learning to make pretzel shapes and spelling out letters with the dough (B for Ben, A for Analeigh, etc. You can see the picture below). Thus, Ben has tried to make pretzel-making a family event in his own family. And, as the video below shows, it appears that David is happy to join in.

213 Days to Go...

That's right only 213 days until Father's Day. On a related note, Liz's Aunt Dona (with 1 n) sent us the following video entitled I'm Watching You Dad. Admittedly, Ben is not a big fan of promoting cheezy, sappy, or otherwise emotional videos (and this video fits that description pretty well). Plus, the child who narrates uses far too big of words for his age. However, Ben does feel it has a good message about the importance of being a good father and an example of righteousness (even if Ben has been known to fall short of the ideal from time-to-time).

2008 Family Photo

We went to Picture Me Portrait Studios inside our local Wal-Mart today to have our family picture taken. The fellow taking the photos did our family picture first - when David was unwilling to smile. Then he took some pictures of Ben and Analeigh, then Elizabeth and David, then just David, then just Analeigh, then David and Analeigh together. By this time, we had figured out what it took to make David smile. Alas, the photographer never went back to taking another round of family photos. Apparently he was too focused on the upsale. So, this is what we ended up with:

Trunk or Treat!

Tonight we went to the church to celebrate Halloween. We had a dinner of chili, hot dogs, and cornbread, played games, and later had the kids go out to the parking lot to get candy at each car (hence "trunk or treat").

Elizabeth dressed as Strawberry Shortcake. The hat is meant to be the giveaway, but you can't really see it in the picture below. She also added freckles to her face and is wearing a striped shirt. Analeigh, to match with her mother, is dressed as a strawberry. She had a hat, but it kept mysteriously coming off.

David and his daddy went as Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat.

Finally, we got a nice family picture of everyone dressed up.

Shortly after moving to Kansas, Ben gave David a couple of peppermint Altoids. Ben thought David would find them too strong and then have no interest in asking him for the "candy" again. Alas, David loved it. In fact David loved the mints so much that he broke into the tin the next day and started shoveling the mints into his mouth handfuls at a time. Liz was able to stop him from eating the whole tin, but he still ate a fair share of mints. The experience has caused us to wonder about David's sense of taste. The video below only perplexes us further.

Analeigh has been confused by all the parties today (one at Ben's work earlier and now here at church). In all the confusion, she just wants her mommy to hold her (her daddy just doesn't cut it). Instead of immediately coming to the rescue, mommy chose to video tape her (though mommy did eventually give up on the tough love and pick up Analeigh after she stopped recording).
